We were both swimming in a fitness pool, with lane lines — a steel cable running from end to end strung with 10" hard plastic red disks alternating with 3" hard plastic beads. I've shared the pool with blind swimmers who use shadow vision/echolocation to maintain a straight line parallel to the lane lines, which do reflect the waves from swimmers' passage.
I started out disoriented swimming in the lake up north. Then I discovered that the shore was dark green, and used the contrast between trees and skies to travel relatively straight.
