Very local holidays
May. 2nd, 2024 11:29 pmI reluctantly decided this morning that the pants/trousers I'd been wearing the last couple days couldn't really last another and put them in the laundry basket. This left me with a dilemma though: those light cotton pants are the only ones I felt good about wearing right now. After scrutinizing the clean laundry and the contents of the closet and drawers, I didn't find anything more suitable than the shorts I'd worn last week because I always wear shorts to the gym.
It hasn't been warm enough for shorts lately. But they were so comfy (I bought them for the fortnight I was stuck basically in bed with a cast up to my knee, so they're new enough that they fit me really well), and there was blue sky and sunshine outside my bedroom window, and I thought fuck it, I'll just be cold.
But I wasnt!
If I hadn't put shorts on this morning, I'd have probably wanted to go change into them by lunchtime.
It doesn't hurt that the room I work in gets a lot of lovely morning sun when that's a thing we get. And it's not a big room. So it does warm up. I even had to turn the fan on this afternoon!
But it really was warm today. I loved it. Gary loved it. He had such a happy day, he was such a good boy. He has always loved the sun and warm weather, and now the bright sunshine won't be great for his cataracts but the warmth is good for his arthritic hip. He's always been a little sun worshipper.
Now every spring, MB and I talk about how we spend the winter thinking "poor Gary, he's getting old, he's really slowing down and showing his age" and we do our best to adjust to the new reality of his declining cognitive function and joints and stuff. But then spring comes and every year he perks up like you wouldn't believe. He was bouncing on the spot today whenever he thought anyone had food to share with him or had treats for him or would take him for a walk. He was bright and alert and zooming around on the million little walks he asked for.
Yesterday was a special day: the first day we could have both the back door in the kitchen and the living room patio doors open. This is special because it's Gary's favorite thing: he might not run around in a big circle that's half-inside and half-outside the house like he used to when this was just his holiday home, but he does adore being able to go outside whenever he wants, or just stand at the door and take in all the smells, and while he might not be running to do it any more he does still love to go out one door and come in the other and stroll around the whole circle.
Every good day is a gift, every spring is a gift.
